Assessor
The Town of Mount Hope Assessor is an appointed official responsible for maintaining and analyzing the assessments of every real property parcel in the community, as required by New York State Real Property Tax Law. This work includes maintaining accurate property inventories and ownership records, reviewing property characteristics and market data, analyzing assessments annually, reviewing and approving tax exemptions, collaborating with local boards and officials, and meeting with property owners to discuss valuations. The assessor determines assessed values based on property conditions and market information as of the applicable valuation date, and those assessments are used by New York State in the equalization process. All information is compiled into the public assessment roll.
Assessors must complete state-mandated certification and training requirements within three years of taking office and are required to complete continuing education annually. While assessors play an important role in the property tax system, they do not set tax rates; those decisions are made solely by elected officials who create and adopt municipal budgets.
